Afua Asantewaa O. Aduonum has been disqualified for the second time by the Guinness World Record (GWR) for not adhering to the guidelines set for her longest singing record attempt.
The GWR said in an email to Afua Asantewaa that she failed to follow the rules regarding rest breaks during her attempt.
The organization’s expert Record Managers reviewed the evidence provided and concluded that the claim of breaking the singathon record was not valid.
“Rest breaks are the only point where the claimant may stop performing the activity during the attempt.”
Not only that, the rules specify that “You are allowed 5 minutes rest for every continuously completed hour of activity.”
However, Afua Asantewaa took a 15-minute break at 23:25 when she only had 5 minutes of rest time to use, and later took 105 minutes at sequence 21 when she only had 10 minutes of accrued rest time.
The GWR noted that the record attempt was therefore failed at this point.
“We can only approve a record when all of the rules have been followed, as that is how we ensure fairness across all record attempts. We congratulate you on your efforts and hope you can understand our reasoning for the disqualification,” excerpts of the email read.
This is the second time Afua Asantewaa has been disqualified by the GWR, promoting reactions from Ghanaians and fans of the singer.
Following her first disqualification, Afua Asantewaa began a second marathon singing session on December 21, 2024, at Heroes’ Park within the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, and concluded on December 26, 2024, after singing for 121 hours and 39 minutes.
The goal was to surpass the existing record of 105 hours, set by Indian singer Sunil Waghmare in 2012.
Over the five-day period, the 34-year-old media personality and singer performed over 200 songs, representing a diverse range of Ghanaian genres, including gospel, highlife, afrobeat, and hiplife.
