Accra, Ghana – A 59-year-old man who recently embraced Christianity after leaving Islam was attacked near his home in Ghana’s Northern Region, sparking concern and calls for peace within the community.
The man, whose name is being withheld for his protection, made the decision to follow Christ just a few weeks ago after attending several Christian gatherings. Friends and neighbours say his decision was deeply personal and made after much reflection and prayer.
Unfortunately, his conversion has not been met with understanding by all. On Tuesday evening, he was reportedly ambushed by unknown individuals and sustained injuries that required medical attention. His family says he had been facing growing pressure and threats since publicly declaring his new faith.
“We thought things would settle down over time,” a family member shared. “But now we are very worried for his safety. He’s not a young man—he just wants to live in peace with the choice he’s made.”
Local church leaders have spoken out strongly against the attack. Reverend Emmanuel Kofi Mensah, a well-respected pastor in the region, urged calm and called on the authorities to act swiftly. “No one should live in fear because of their faith,” he said. “This man deserves respect and protection, just like anyone else.” Police have confirmed that an investigation is underway, though no arrests have been made yet. Meanwhile, community elders and religious leaders are stepping in to ease tensions and promote dialogue.
While Ghana’s Constitution guarantees religious freedom, social hostility toward those who change their faith—especially in close-knit communities—can sometimes surface.
